Under Copyright law a created work is automatically protected as soon as it exists. However, it is prudent to register your copyright to ensure better protection from infringers. For a copyright to be registered, it must be original and in tangible form.

With a breadth of experience in copyright practice in response to the rapid advances in science and technology, our team handles copyright issues relating to title, fair use, filing, infringement, licensing and enforcement.

Copyright protection is granted to authors, artists and other creators including but not limited to literary and artistic works such as novels, poems, plays, films, musical compositions, drawings, sculptures and architecture as well as computer software, programs and databases.

Copyright protection lasts for the lifetime of the author and 50 years after his/ her death for natural persons and for companies, it lasts for 50 years after the date of the 1st publication.

An application for registration of Copyright can be applied by filling in the appropriate application form and attachment of a copy of the work for which protection is sought along with receipts of payment and Power of Attorney.

Upon acceptance for registration, the application is published in the Uganda Gazette for 60 days. If no objection is made to the registration, then a certificate of registration is issued to the applicant.
